Wrap Up

More overnight losses. Old-crop soybean futures were 17 to 23 cents lower, while November beans were 12 cents lower overnight. Corn futures were 4 to 6 cents lower. Chicago wheat futures were 6 to 7 cents lower in overnight trade. And much of Iowa was deluged overnight which will keep planters in the shed for a few more days in this key corn state.

Bush will sign farm bill extension. The White House says President Bush will sign the latest one-week extension of the 2002 Farm Bill, giving lawmakers to May 2 to try and get things worked out on a new farm bill. And those lawmakers say they are "close" to a deal. Jim Wiesemeyer has more in his Inside Washington Today column on the Pro Farmer page as this fifth extension of the 2002 Farm Bill is at hand.

So just what is Ukraine up to? Earlier Thursday, Ukraine's prime minister said the country had plentiful stocks and export restrictions on wheat would be lifted. But a government resolution published late Thursday says the country has raised the allowable quantity of wheat for export to 1.2 MMT from 200,000 MT previously instead of lifting the export ban.

Japan examining beef inspections. In the wake of spinal cord material being found in a box of beef to Japan, the country's prime minister has ordered an examination of their inspection system used for U.S. beef. Already the country has increased inspections to 10% of shipments, up from a prior 1%.
