Importation requirements for pigs include:
Updated 1/11/07
States in the U.S. are classified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as to the status of pseudorabies in that state. At this time, all states are considered Free of pseudorabies and classified as Stage V.
Prior import permit; issued by telephone; call (602) 542-4293 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST Monday through Friday.
-
An original or certified copy of a health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian within 10 days prior to entry.
-
Required statements on the health certificate:
a) “The swine have never been fed garbage” and
b) "The swine have not been vaccinated for pseudorabies"
-
Individual identification of each swine listed on the health certificate. The identification required depends on whether the swine are going to a show, being imported for commercial purposes, or being consigned to a restricted swine feedlot.
a) Feeder swine not consigned to a restricted swine feedlot and show swine must be identified by 1) a state premises identification number (two letter state abbreviation followed by a series of numbers) AND 2) earnotches that conform to the universal swine earnotching system (both ears notched; one ear for litter number and the other for the pig number). The state premises number may be applied as a tattoo or a tamperproof eartag.
b) Commercial breeding swine must be identified by 1) a state premises identification number (two letter state abbreviation followed by a series of numbers) AND 2) some other form of identification (metal tag, plastic tag, earnotches). The state premises number may be applied as a tattoo or a tamperproof eartag.
c) Feeder swine consigned to a restricted swine feedlot need only be identified by a state premises identification number (two letter state abbreviation followed by a series of numbers).
Contact your state’s State Veterinarian to obtain a state premises identification number.
- No pre-entry pseudorabies testing is required at this time.
- Imported show swine regardless of origin that are NOT going directly to a show must be inspected by a Department Livestock Officer or Inspector within 30 days after entry. A “certificate of exhibition swine” will be completed providing all entry requirements are satisfied including the prior import permit, veterinarian’s health certificate, and required identification. See Show Swine Inspection Requirements.
